Makes sense. But how are other manufacturers able to compensate such that there is no visible exposure stepping?

I use this lens to film golf shots from behind the player. As they hit the ball I use the PZ function to zoom into the green to see the ball land. It's annoying/not professional to have the exposure changing as I'm doing this.
