I must say that I really wonder why these threads keep popping up. Virtually no one buys these lenses, and i suspect that many of those posting are probably not ever going to purchase either one. The 600 F4 is already extremely expensive for all but the very wealthy and working Pros who NEED it. Most of them probably actually rent it. The 1200 F8 is even more expensive and esoteric. They are manufactured in extremely limited quantities which inevitably affects the price.

If you think the 1200 F8 is not worth the scratch compared to the 600 F4 plus a 2X converter then, by all means, purchase the 600 F4 plus a 2X Extender. That’s probably what I would do if I were in the market for either of these. But if you NEED the 1200 F8 then you’re gonna buy it (or rent it). I suspect that if you NEED it you’re just happy that it exists.

Canon is not a charity. It’s under no obligation to produce these exotic lenses at low prices that would attract a mass market, because a mass market for this sort of exotica does not exist.

This!!!!!
