This is foreign territory to me (14 vs 12-bit raw). Could you enlighten me on how much DR am I losing by shooting in ES versus ECFS or MS? I could not choose in the M50 or RP (as they only offer ECFS) but now I can with the M6II I just bought. In that camera it seems zoom lenses at slower shutter speeds (than 1/250 or so) are prone to shutter shock so I was planning to shoot landscapes with the ES to avoid that risk…is that a bad idea?

As far as I know, the M6 II is still 14 bit in ES.

This is very unlikely. Canon says:

It's also worth noting that, on all Canon EOS DSLRs and mirrorless cameras except for the EOS R3, the maximum bit depth drops from 14-bit with mechanical shutter to 12-bit with electronic shutter – meaning that when you shoot RAW using the electronic shutter, the camera is saving images with a slightly narrower range of colours and tones.

Although this article was published after the M6 II was discontinued and therefore it is not in the list of cameras with ES it is very unlikely that it would be the only non stacked sensor Canon camera having 14-bit in ES.

I haven't found out whether the original R is 12 or 14 bit in ES

12-bit for 100%.

- I regularly do 30s exposures in ES with it and it's got an 80ms readout time so I'm living in hope.
