I don’t want a battery grip but rather a base extension like the EG-E1 Canon makes for the RP would be welcome - an extension of the camera base to give my pinkie finger a hold, and also an attachment point for my hand strap.

One problem is that the R7 has no locating holes for the pins to fit into to prevent rotation of an extension plate. It seems that Canon has deliberately designed the R7 to not be compatible with plates like the EG-E1 and that may explain the absence of thread party products.

I need something for my little finger to grip too..... But why does it have to be the entire base of the body, all the way across ?

It doesn’t. Something like this would be good enough if it has a strap loop

I took the first glance at this (thinking it was for the R7) and I got so excited, I was ready to hit the buy button ! Only for the R, huh 😢 Has anybody messaged the seller / manufacturer ? Somebody needs to tell them their is a huge pile of money laying on the table waiting for them !

I swear if that was a precision piece, I'd give them $100 for it right now !

Can you imagine an R7 that actually felt good in your hand ?!?!

Yes, and I have it. It’s the R7.

The crazy thing to me is, all the folks who are okay with it as is ?

I actually have pretty small hands, and the R7 as is, just feels wrong.

I have pretty big hands, and it feels just right.

Maybe because I've been using a big bulky grip for 20 years, on every DSLR I've ever used ?

Me too. 15 years shooting gripped 20D, 50D, 7D, 7DII. And that’s why the R7 feels so good to me. I got tired (literally) of shooting with such a bulky setup.

I find when using big lenses the extra bulk of a battery grip is negligible compared to its benefits

After 6 months using the R7 I recently took my gripped 7DII out on a birding shoot.
The larger body with better hand-hold felt a lot more comfortable and secure in my hands

At one point my foot got tangled in some tree roots on a steep river bank and I came close to taking a fall and I had to take my left hand away from supporting the lens.
7DII + 300mm f/2.8 + 2x in my right hand as I went 1/2 way to the ground.
I didn't drop the camera but I'm quite sure that had it been the R7 I would have lost it and likely broken the camera | lens mount

I've experienced the same kind of half falls carrying my R5 with grip + Sigma 150-600 ( a pretty hefty setup) but that combo has a hand strap (not possible without a battery grip) and so even when getting ready to body slam into the rocks, my hand through the strap was practically connected to the combo, and I didn't drop it. Another time, I did go down, but the only part of the camera that hit the ground was the lip of the lens hood, so no damage was done. Both of those times would have likely meant the R7 combo being slammed into the ground / rocks.

Ya know, if I were better with computer design, I'd buy one of these, tweak it for use on the R7, and had the right tools, I'd build one of these for myself...

Just give me the portion where my little finger wants to rest, and add something for the bottom strap of a hand strap can connect to, and I'd be golden 🙂
