Until you can get the AF setting dialed in so that they work better for you, you can try turning off subject tracking and eye detection and just use the center AF point (or the center point with the 4 expasion points.) I'm finding that my R7 works better that way for some sports.

When using the subject tracking on cameras like the R5, I find it works best to go to the AF menu and set it so that you can manually select the initial AF point, rather than letting the camera choose the initial AF point. Use the center point as your initial AF point. Then you can point the center AF point at your subject, depress the AF button on the back of the camera, and let the camera track the subject from there. That works great for some sports. For other sports the camera really, really wants to focus on the eyes of the fans in the stands.
