I have used various mics over the years. At present I'm using a Rode Stereo VideoMic Pro mounted on the R5 shoe. Sound is ok. Build quality of the mic is a bit flimsy. The small on/off switch fell off a while back so I use a small key to move the pin that's left to operate the switch. I shoot a fair amount of steam train footage and I'm a bit fussy about sound quality.
The footage here was with this mic with gain turned up to +20. I forgot to turn down the R5's audio levels.
I'm thinking about upgrading to the Rode Stereo VideoMic X which is pricey at around £500/600. Audio quality is supposed to be near broadcast quality.
I also have a Sennheiser MKE 200. A neat little mic but I can't use it for train videos on electrified lines where the overhead catenary causes a loud buzzing on the sound track I presume because this mic may have poor suppression. There's no problem with my Rode mic
Shame the R5 hasn't got the latest hot shoe to take the Canon mic. Not that it bothers me as I often record a separate sound track on a separate recorder.
