I'm so surprised you didn't like the Z7ii.
A bit similar path for me, shoot with a dslr for many years, D7000/D600, but then with a Sony a7rii, really with the happy silent mode for concert photography but it felt like it was not that well built and can be buggy.
Then a while with a Fuji XT2, really nice feel but not strong weather sealing, one ribbon got water inside and now the shutter button is dead.
Sold everything, back to choosing a camera and a brand. Tried the a7IV, lot of improvement but the evf/back screen was Meh, then the Canon R5, I really hated the body, RF glasses are amazing but the body, didn't like it at all. Then I tried a Z6ii, I loved it right away, the high def evf, the feel of the body and z glasses are also amazing. I picked up a second hand Z6 and I love it! Battery life is really good, never failed once, I really like it! Obviously tastes are different for everybody but really surprised when I read your story
To me the R5 body wasn't too appealing to start either, I mean to say Nikons typically feel more "solid", but the tradeoffs were too great, Z6/7 AF is subpar, and the whole interface is just not there, after living with the R5 for a while I see nothing wrong with the body, everything is super intuitive and customizable, in the current state of things I'm quite happy I jumped ships, even though, had I been shooting solely for fun, a D850 would make me even happier (as would a Kodak Brownie to others...).
