Sometimes breaking compatibility is necessary to move forward. Those sometimes should be rare, just as it has been. Nikon tried to maintain compatibility with the F-mount, as you noted, and while it might be possible to mechanically mount a very old lens on a new body, that combination might not be very usable. That hasn't happened with Canon since the switch.

That's the very reason I stuck with Canon after the FD-to-EF big bang switchover. With my FD equipment obsoleted and auto-focusing clearly the next evolutionary step, I had no reason not to consider other manufacturers.

But at the time, Nikon was the only other 35mm manufacturer fully supporting professional photographers (Minolta, Pentax, et al, had dabbled their toes into the professional market, then pulled back out).

But Nikon, attempting to retain the hoary old F-mount, was a mess of conflicting compatibilities. You needed a score card to figure out what lenses worked with what bodies and to what level of compatibility.

As angry as I had been over Canon's decision to obsolete my FD equipment (and I was angry for quite a while), I had to admit they'd made the best decision.
