I know the upgrade to RF will not be major for me but image stabilization for events with people is what I look forward to. I have IS on the RF 70-200f2.8 and it is delightful when it makes a difference. It rarely does harm. I am always wanting to get the shots better with a higher yield. Nothing is perfect though. It always depends on your budget, importance and convenience of the shots which is the best for you and your situations.

Actually for bird of prey the RF 70-200f2.8 may be better. There plenty of light and very little value in shallow depth of view in many of those shots. However, for the small birds in trees I was after sometimes the f1.8 may given you a good uncluttered look with the shallow depth of field.

I'd have assumed that focal length would have trumped most other dimensions. I guess it depends where you are / what type of birds... but I have found often even 400/500mm to be wanting

Sometimes cellphone or G5XII is best. It all depends.

I hope your are in the March shipment along with me.

Well surprise! Adorama has just charged my card! They say they are preparing shipment and it should leave their warehouse in 1 or 2 days... fingers crossed!
