I think many posters are too optimistic here. Canon have consistently tried to push users to purchase more expensive gear. The SL3 infamously did away with the center firing pin on its hotshoe, forcing users to use E-TTL speedlites and flash triggers. Now the R50 has simply no more pins - you either get the expensive EL-5, or purchase an adapter.
I missed that one - I hope the reviews highlight that so that people don't find out after buying an R50 that they can't use their old flash or buy any of the lower cost ones without the inconvenience and expense of an adapter (£60 in the UK, if you can even find one).
I've also now read that the R50 has no dioptre adjustment on the viewfinder - so good luck if you're over 40 and need reading glasses, as most of us do.
Check out the Specs on Canons site Steve and you will find that there is a diopter adjustment. Not sure where you saw that.
Really? Well I am delighted to be wrong, and that will teach me not to rely on a single source. Especially when the source was Ken Rockwell - see https://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r50.htm#bad . (Fool me once...)
I've now triple-checked the point about Speedlite support and it is definitely correct!!
No doubt about the Speedlite and sensor cleaning issue but what some might have missed is that there is no highlight alert either on playback either !
We're drifting a long way off topic now, so I'll just make a closing comment on this subject. There are things which are entirely understandable in an entry level model - the savings and product differentiation have to come from somewhere. No IBIS would be one, and a less weatherproofing would be another. No highlight alert, well, OK. But the Speedlite thing is definitely in a different category. There was no excuse for that.
