Obviously, an optical viewfinder has zero delay or lag (or whatever you want to call it(, irrespective of how suddenly or rapidly you move the camera.

Do quick, sudden, rapid movements of the R3 result in any viewfinder lag?

Yes, any, any Electronic, viewfinder has lag compared to optical.

Electronic, viewfinders have refresh rates. Optical have zero. This will always be true. Well, for my lifetime I suspect.

Now that out of the way, smooth mode which isn’t so battery conservative, is my default and results in virtually no lag. It does hit the battery performance hard though. The R3 battery can take it thankfully…

It should be noted the human eye has limits as to what refresh it can perceive. I believe the refresh rate in smooth mode exceeds that. Don’t quote me.

I could be wrong, but I don’t think refresh rate has anything to do with the time delay between reality and what’s displayed in the viewfinder.

You could have a refresh rate of a million times a second and still have a viewfinder that lags behind reality by 1/8 of a second.

Am I wrong on this?

You're not. It gets into the weeds. There's the refresh rate of the EVF, and the latency of it too. Nobody measures the latter.

It's no longer a problem like it was in the old days, if that answers the crux of it. It's really good.

I’m amazed that lag isn’t measured, because it is one of the biggest drawbacks of mirrorless systems.

How do you measure it (lag ie latency, not refresh)?

Benchmarking itself can be difficult, if not near impossible without a mfg spec.
