I'm sure Canon won't disable EF lenses on future bodies. They will work with future bodies at least as well as they do on the original EOS R, possibly better as a result of improved focussing systems and global shutters. I know that I enjoy the experience of using my EF lenses on my R more than I enjoy using them on my 5Ds, largely because of the improved mirrorless focussing and handling.

I bought my EF 16-35mm f/4 lens after I bought the R because the RF 15-35mm was several times the price and only just introduced. One of my RF lenses was a stop slower than the EF equivalent, but it made up for that by being more than a kilogram lighter and a fraction of the price. The 16mm had no EF equivalent.

It's the market preference for new RF lenses that will kill off EF, no need for any shenanigans with future bodies. Right now with current pricing and with R&D, assembly lines, certification and training long paid for, EF lenses are probably at least as profitable for Canon as RF, so the main pressure to stop making them is lack of sales.

Do you still use your 5Ds now that you have the R? I have the 16-35/4 L IS as well which is the latest EF lens I have. It's a superb lens!

I'm priced out with the L RF lenses thus since the EF-RF adapter is working seamlessly I plan just to use them when I get into the R system. For example in my photography a 135mm lens is a staple but there is no way I can afford the new RF 135/1.8 L IS especially since I have the 135/2 L.

I bought my 5Ds in the clearance sale, a couple of years after the R. The ultimate resolution is better than that of the R but it's harder work. After a portrait workshop this week, the initial cull left two images from the RX100M2 (one of which was using it for badness with a trigger to fire the studio flash setup), four from the R plus EF 24-105mm L and 12 from the 5Ds plus EF 100mm f/2. I must try to use it more often.

The EF 16-35/4 L IS is now over double the price I paid for mine, new with a double cashback. The RF 14-35/4 L IS wasn't available then, but with the current £200 cashback it's effectively £1550 against £1440 for the RF lens. The 16-35mm is a lovely lens, but it was the R and the RF lenses I took across the Atlantic.

I would definitely advise you to keep that EF 135mm until it dies when you move to mirrorless.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I'm still undecided which camera to go for: either go with the R6MKII now or wait until they announce the R5MKII. I'm leaning heavily on the R6MKII as the well controlled rolling shutter using ES impresses me a lot.

In the meantime I can still shoot with 5Ds. It got even better with the software available these days i.e. DXO PL6 Elite with the Prime XD and Topaz Labs suite. One thing that bothered me a bit with the 5Ds files is noise on the green foliage. No problem when I either ran the PL6 or Topaz DeNoise. Also, as if I get a pseudo eye AF when I use the Photo AI on images that weren't sharp.
