I think the answer is YES, EF lenses will continue to work if not explicitly supported,

however there is no guarantee that there won't be future camera features which will only work with RF lenses because of certain EF lens electromechanical performance limitations. And perhaps Canon will contrive to make that happen

Peter

That much was true from the very beginning. There are already features that only work with RF lenses. That's not a matter of "contrivance," that's a matter of progress.

yes but Canon might design some features that only work with RF lenses - could be some form of advanced in-camera focus stacking etc - ie features deliberately designed to add value to RF lens ownership but offer nothing to EF lens users.

Peter

They might do, but more likely to innovate rather than out of malice. If you have a great new idea and innovative feature do you not produce it as you know it will not work with legacy products? Of course not.

I'm not suggesting anything would be done out of "malice" but rather developments deliberately designed to make RF lenses more attractive and to give EF lens owners some incentive to switch 'up' to RF

Peter

I am sure you are not, but plenty imply that which I always find odd. Often it is such a lot of work to retain backwards compatibility that it is not worth it or even possible.

and yet 13 years after they ended their DSLR line and went 100% mirrorless  Olympus (and now OM Digital Solutions) still makes specific accommodation of the old Olympus Four Thirds System lenses and that keeps me 'in the fold' as an OMDS customer.

And as an aside, with Olympus/ OMDS Micro Fourthirds I can (and do)  use native MFT lenses, legacy Olympus FT lens (with an Olympus adapter) and EF lenses with my Metabones adapter.

It's a big plus to have a cameras system with which you can use/adapt a wide variety of lens brands/formats.  If ever Canon does end EF support then that will be the end of my support of them.
