I have sometimes just taken my Canon G7XII (similar to Sony RX100 series) on such trips, and had some great results. It has a 24-100 (FF equivalent) F1.8-2.8 zoom (so capable of decently shallow DOF), and good 1 inch sensor. The main thing that I find lacking when I use it these days is the amazingly fast AF of my mirrorless ILCs, but the AF is perfectly serviceable for most things. And DXO Photolab has given the IQ quite a boost. If you want something really small and light, but still more capable than a phone (for most things), one of these 1 inch sensor cameras could be a good choice.

Well, here is what I finally did. I returned my R10 because I decided that I didn’t want to have even that size camera on the trip. And, for when I’m not traveling my R5 and R7 are all I need. I recently sold my G7XII, when I thought I was going to use the R10 for the trip. So, after researching the Sony RX100vii, the G5XII and the G7XIII…drum roll…B&H had the G7XIII for $50 off = $699, so I ordered it. I always liked the G7XII and the image quality was very good. And, the mark III is using a Digic 8 processor vs the Digic 7 processor on the mark II. This should make it a little faster and a more capable camera. Anyway, that’s my story. Thank everyone for your input, it all did help.
