EOS R8 or EOS R for my Social Media Significant Other

Hello,

An important date is coming up in a few months and I want to gift a Canon EOS R8 or a Canon EOS R to my significant other to help them develop their social media pages and get them into photography/videography like I am. They use currently use an iPhone which has gotten them very far in their social media page already.

Since having a camera opens up more creative possibilities (different focal lengths, more flexible images), I want to give them a chance to see for themselves. They don't like to use my cameras even when I offer them because they don't want to mess up my settings. I currently have a lot of RF lenses they can borrow, so I don't want to consider Fuji X, Sony E, or Nikon Z at the moment.

This leads me to the EOS R8 vs EOS R conversation in my head. The R8 has a newer, faster sensor, great autofocus, and very usable 4K video features. Conversely, the rear screen (3" 1.62 mil dot), the EVF (2.36 mil dot), and the battery all make it difficult for a beginner to take advantage of it. The EOS R has an older sensor with OK autofocus and poor 4K video features. However, it has (relatively) much better battery life and much better displays (EVF is 3.69 mil dot / rear screen is 3.2" 2.1 mil dot). Since social media is mostly FHD, I feel like UHD isn't that important of a feature. I don't anticipate Instagram, TikTok, or Snapchat taking advantage of 4K video soon either.

Since my significant other composes their pictures with the front facing camera on their iPhone, having a large and detailed display may help them take better photos. Is there any killer feature on the new EOS R8 that makes the EOS R less usable? To overcome the battery issue, I know that the EOS R8 can charge over USB-C. However, I know on the EOS R6, the camera will not charge while it's on. Can the EOS R8 charge while it's being used? Or should I save $500 and pick up the EOS R?

Also, does the EOS R really lack an intervalometer still?

Many thanks,
yeungp1
