The lack of that RF 50mm f/1.4 is the Achilles heel.....

The EF 50mm f/1.4 took six years to arrive from the beginning of the EF mount,

and Canon never updated it

even though it was Canon's eighth SLR 50mm f/1.4.

So there was an era Canon did updates on 50mm&f/1.4 a long long time ago. How many mounts ago by the way?

According to the Canon online Museum, the first FL mount version with 5 elements in 4 groups came out in in 1965, the second 6 elements in 5 groups version came in 1966. The 1968 7 elements in 5 groups FL lens had the same basic optical design as the FD versions that came out in 1971, 1973 (1), 1973 (2) and the 1979 New FD lens.

Thanks Sittatunga, I appreciate this historical overview.

The 1993 EF lens was basically the same optical design as the FD lenses.

So it goes back the the 1968 FL design. That explains a lot about it's performance.

At least my grandfather had the option to purchase freshly designed Canon 50mm f/1.4 when he was at the same age as I am now.
