Why not split the difference and get an R6 Mk I? IMO it makes no sense to pay $1500+ for a camera without IBIS in 2023, unless it's a specialzed camera like a GH5 or some kind of collector's item.

if you were familiar with the Canon RF system, you'd know most of the lenses have IS

also, top reviewers disagree with you

Lol, I had an EOS R for 2 years. So I'm speaking from experience when I say IS is no substitute for IBIS, which is a concern of OP.

well, as I remember you bailed from early Canon Rf to an A7III

the concern I would have about the A7III is focus acquisition in low light as it is only rated -1ev @F4 whereas the R8 has a whopping 2 and 1/3 stop better focus acquisition with -3.2 EV at F4 which will focus @F4 in full moon light

I'd be much more concerned about acquiring focus in low light with your sony versus not having IBIS when most of the Canon RF lenses have IS

Couple of things:

  • Brand loyalty is a fools errand, so trying to guilt me for leaving a system that wasn't working for me is silly. What did loyalty get folks who bought into EF-M, Samsung NX, DSLRs, etc? Camera manufacturers put their interests first, so I will do the same for myself... you should too.
  • Canon RF low light AF is def superior to Sony's, but that doesn't make Sony low light AF unusable. Again I'm speaking from experience here, are you?
  • I seriously doubt someone who spent thousands of dollars on a midrange FF body kit doesn't have anything faster than an F/4 zoom in their kit. An F/1.8-2 prime is a couple hundred dollars and is the obvious choice for low light shooting, which helps further with low light AF. So your scenario doesn't even seem realistic.
  • IS can't do everything IBIS does (i.e. deal with sensor rotation), and most primes, even RF mount, aren't stabilized at all. There is a reason IBIS is pretty much the standard for cameras at or above the R8's price point.

I'm sure the R8 is a fine camera as anything at its price point is. But it's a very strange camera IMO, given the holes in Canon's lineup and the norm for the industry in general.

IMO, the R8 is a camera designed and priced to bring people from DSLRs and other brands into the Canon ecosystem.  It will probably even bring some Fuji users to Canon.  For me it has taken buying into Fuji or Canon for APS-C off the table and staying with Canon for FF only.  IMO, the only thing that is strange about the R8 is that Canon released an incredibly capable, small, lightweight camera that they didn't gimp much at a very attractive price point.
