Edit: I was replying to MAC, but something went wrong or I made a mistake.

I think it's a pretty bad idea to mount such a slow yet big wide angle zoom as a standard zoom on a crop camera.

I'm done with crop, except my 32 and 11-22 and FE

The RF mount is clearly designed for full frame,

and to combine this mount with aps-c sensors are clearly an afterthought.

+1000

I ordered an FE 28-60mm for compactness sake by the way.

best wishes

I will consider it to be an f/8.0 lens for IQ reasons.

I haven't given up on the 24-50 puppy at f8 for $200 - need to see some reviews

My plan is to buy the R8 without the kit lens. Then wait a year or so and buy the RF 24-50mm when it is on fire sale for around $80-$100 at Christmas. Or wait until it is on sale in the Canon refurbished store. IMO, this lens is like the RF 50mm f/1.8 when it comes to being sold at a discount. Also, I think the RF 24-105mm STM might be a better choice for me unless the RF 24-50mm proves to have much better sharpness and IQ than I have seen so far.

what lenses do you plan to run on R8?

This is the list so far:

  • RF 24-240mm
  • RF 50mm f/1.8 or a RF 50mm f/1.4 if Canon brings one to market
  • RF- 85mm f/2
  • RF 15-30mm
  • RF 100-400mm
  • RF 24-105mm STM or RF 24-50mm
  • RF 1.4 Extender
  • EF 24-105mmL
  • EF 50mm f/2.5 Macro with 1:1 Extender
  • RF 16mm

I might add the RF 70-200mm f/4 at some point. My goal is to mostly use smaller, lightweight zooms. Without the R8 this approach wouldn't be on my RADAR screen.

good stuff, the R 8 is putting you on the right track imo

The lack of that RF 50mm f/1.4 is the Achilles heel..... The f/4.0 L is a corner stone.

Canon should have a mid tier 50mm lens in the RF catalog by now.

But even stopped down that far it will do the same thing as a 17-38mm f/5 on a Canon crop sensor in a really small and light weight package. I think that's a better idea than a big slow 15-30mm on an M50, with no space at all for your fingers.
