i don't think that resolution is the main differentiator these days, it's sensor size.  It's not so much what the camera does, it's the way that it does it.

I find this very noticeable comparing images from my 20Mpx RX100 with my 18Mpx EOS M. There's a crop factor of about 1.6 between the two formats and, even with images from both resampled to just over 1Mpx the images from the bigger format are noticeably better.  It's not the resolution, it's the colour depth and gradation, the depth of field combined with the bokeh. Having said that, the crop factor between the half-frame 645 format GFX cameras and full-frame varies between just over 1.2 and just under 1.4 depending on how square you like your pictures.

Where 35mm format really scores though is lens choices.
