Re: R8-no ibis vs. R6 MKll - Ibis

Thread summary as of 2/11/23

Pros-R6 Mkll

  • Larger battery
  • Full mechanical shutter
  • IBIS
  • Vertical grip accessory possible
  • Weather sealing
  • Bottom line: great all rounder if budget allows

Pros-R6

  • Functionality of the R6 MKll with fewer MP etc.
  • Good price point in between the R6 MKll and R8

Pros-R8

  • Small form
  • Light weight
  • Lots of R6 Mkll functionality
  • Lower price!

Cons-R8

  • Smaller battery
  • No IBIS
  • No weather sealing
  • Partial mechanical shutter

Bottom line: Lower price leaves room to add a couple of new RF lenses

IBIS benefits

  • Most noticeable benefit is to around 200mm
  • At 400mm or more, lens IS does the work.
  • Non-telephoto, non-IS lenses and RF-mount IS lenses
  • Shooting hand-held non-stabilized lenses
  • Lenses up to 80mm without lens IS
  • All RF lenses with or without lens IS
  • Shooting at low ISO, slower shutter speeds = more keepers
  • EF 2.8 macro lens
  • Allows room for creative exploration

No IBIS

  • Stating the obvious, IBIS isn’t need when using a tripod.
  • Lens IS is more than enough to keep things steady
  • Short focal length fast lenses may not need IBIS for hand held shots
