I bought the R6II right when it came out, so I had no idea the R8 was in the pipeline. If I had waited until now, I would definitely be in a predicament.
I'm not sure if I see $1000 worth of extra stuff in the R6II vs the R8. IBIS is nice, but I've also lived without it up until this point. The fully mechanical shutter is another consideration, but also not worth the cost difference.
But I think if you offered me a trade, my R6II for an R8 and $1000, I'd also hesitate. I came to the R6II from an original 5D and one of the things I wanted was to take advantage of all the new tech that's available now. It would be tough for me to give up the IBIS now that I've had a taste.
I bought the R6II before Christmas and I love it. I also went through some of the same thoughts when the R8 was announced. Would I have decided differently if I knew about the R8? I very soon came to the conclusion: No, I wouldn't have done anything differently. I also wanted to take advantage of all the new tech. But I also started making a list of some differences:
- Larger battery
- Full mechanical shutter
- IBIS
- Vertical grip accessory possible
- Weather sealing
- Two SD cards
- Joystick
- EVF 3,69 dots vs. 2,36
- Continuous shooting 12 fps (EFCS/Mech) vs 6 fps (EFCS)
When comparing spec sheets, I also found:
- Bluetooth version 5 vs 4.2
- Wifi 5ghz AC/g/n vs. 2.4ghz b/g/n
- Some custom filename possibilities on R6II
The R8 has obviously smaller size and lower weight.
Maybe the R8 manual will reveal more?
Please let me know if I forgot something.
