I have the R6II, and I will say IBIS is lovely to have. It's great if you have (or plan to acquire) older glass that doesn't have IS, and in the long run could save you money as you can buy the non-IS versions of lenses for cheaper prices. For example, I found I could handhold my old 70-200 that didn't have IS down to about 1/15th of a second at 200mm. That's pretty impressive. You can snag that lens for a song these days; much cheaper than the IS versions.

As nice as IBIS can be, we've obviously survived without it up to this point. I wouldn't call it a "must have", but now that I've got it, I'd rather have it. Kinda like my heated mattress pad in winter...I could survive without it but why?

That said, if it came down to the choice of the R8 plus a couple of lenses you want vs. just the R6II body only, I'd vote for the R8. It looks like it will be a fantastic camera. Plus most of the RF lenses have IS built-in.

I'll toss out a third option to consider: a second hand R6. Use prices have dropped considerably since the R6II was released. You could find a clean one for only a couple hundred $$ more than the R8.

I checked and a used R6 is somewhat cheaper than an R8.
I think it comes down to what is most important. The smaller size of R8 or the ibis in R6.
Tricky thing is that if used for traveling one really want both of these features….
Perhaps it’s so tight that the other minor differences will be device for one or the other.
