20 vs 24MP doesn't really add much to actual photos.  Sure it's more, but not enough to really make a difference.  If 20MP is not enough, 24MP isn't going to save the day.  The noise and DR of the two sensors is pretty close.  To me, the sensor is basically a tie between the two.

The R6 is a step up in many areas, just a question if it matters to each photographer.  Better EVF, more buttons and dials, AF joystick, dual card slots, IBIS, faster shooting with mechanical shutters, bigger battery, more weather sealing, etc.

For some shooters none of that will be a compelling reason to get the R6.  If so, go with the R8.  The AF and image quality will be a tad better, which are the two areas Canon was smart to prioritize on the R8!

Can't go wrong with either choice really.
