Then, there's that shiny new line of mostly big and brutally expensive lenses. The selling of which, IMO, is really what ditching the M and EOS DSLR lines is all about.

I don't like being so negative, but I'm getting tired of camera makers orphaning popular camera lines. If they keep this up in a time of ever more clever smartphone cameras, camera makers such as Canon and Nikon might find themselves in a bind. They had better hope there are enough pro's out there with budgets for four- and five-figure cameras and lenses to keep their camera-and-lens businesses profitable.

On the other hand, by consolidating all of their efforts into a single mount, this may possibly the only way Canon can keep their imaging business profitable, or certainly keep it alive. They've known for a very long time that the compact camera market wasn't profitable due to smartphones (I remember being told exactly that by the head of CIG at a briefing when I was TUPE'd to Canon from Oce over 10 years ago - he also hinted that DSLR would be the next for the chopping block due to advances in mirrorless technology).

Camera's only form a relatively small percentage of their global revenue (about 13% according to their 2021 annual report). So whilst I reckon they would survive if they completely dropped out of the camera market it would be a huge blow being they are one of the world leaders in this field and 13% is still a lot of money to lose!
