The R50 appears to be the better camera, and marks the death knell of the M line - as such it will be the better choice for longevity.

However, the question is whether to buy one now or wait. The elephant in the room is lens choice. RF-S only has three lenses to choose from - all zooms (and all pretty much EF-M lenses with a new mount).

  • If have the money to spare and buy the M50 MkII with a mind to replace with RF-S in the future, you will have to replace all of your EF-M lenses too - with exactly the same glass in a new mount (which irks me no-end). Oh, and not to mention speedlites...
  • On the other hand, the price of EF-M could fall and you could build a nice collection (although the death of M has been coming for a long time and I've seen no sign of EF-M lens prices falling)
  • Or you would wait until the RF-S lens line-up is rounded out a little more and go with that instead.

TBH, it's a challenging time to upgrade if you're an M user! Personally, I'd hold fire and wait until the RF-S line is fleshed out. Unless you already have an M system I see no point in buying into an effectively dead system. And I say this as someone who loves his M5 and regularly buys his tech on the used market.
