Both the R50 and the R8 don’t have a true mechanical shutter anymore and the sensor readout isn’t the fastest.

That is also true of most M cameras. The M6 II is the only one with a full mechanical shutter. All others are EFCS.

Good to know, thanks for clarification.

EFCS can not only produce strange bokeh, but it also generates other artifacts, see http://aggregate.ee.engr.uky.edu/DIT/EI2019/efcsb.pdf

For me it’s mechanical or fully electronic if fast enough.

With EFCS only the first impression is great until you start shooting in slightly worse conditions.

EFCS does have advantages in certain situations.  At longer shutter speeds it can help prevent image blurring shutter shock.  For tracking  a moving object, EFCS tends to produce a bit less blackout of your viewfinder.

The "smart" cameras incorporate all three and can switch between them automatically.  For example, using EFCS up to 1/2000, full mechanical from 1/2000 to 1/8000, and full electronic from 1/8000 and above.

The ideal is full electronic with low/no rolling shutter, but until we get that, EFCS definitely has its uses.
