Windows 10 keeps renaming photo files

Hello folks. I hope you can help me; I'm pulling my hair out! I had to purchase a new Windows key over the summer. Since then, the 'new' Windows won't recognize the file names from my Nikon D7100. By default, my camera saves as DSC - , but now when I upload, Windows renumbers/renames all the photos, starting with number 1 with no prefix. But every day it's a new number 1 and I'll have 31 number 1's a month! Editing and even just reviewing is a nightmare. And to upload, I now have to right-click on the camera from This PC and select 'import'; if I let Windows do it, it wants to download every image on the card each time, whether it's from the camera or upload via a card reader. I've tried all the Microsoft forums; I've uninstalled/reinstalled the Nikon (and, now it calls any camera or phone connected to it the Nikon). I tried renaming the photos in the camera via the menu, but that doesn't help either (in the camera the info's intact but in the properties tab for the image it's missing and it's assigning its own numbers). I've gone through every step suggested by the Windows community, and nothing is working. I'm stumped and aggravated. Has anyone else ever run into this and if so, *please* tell me how to fix it! Thanks!

(Windows 10 on an HP Pavilion Dv7 laptop, camera is Nikon D7100)
