Such a compact system with compact lenses - Now being replaced by bulkier RF cameras and bigger RF-S lenses.
I own the R5 and many bigger EF/RF lenses, but my M6 II has always been a joy to carry out for casual photography and videography.
I hope Canon could could produce something as compact and capable as the M system in their RF APS-C lineup, but I'm doubtful due to the physical limitations of the mount size.
I think the big problem is that the bigger sellers in the market are the bigger cameras. I can't find a current micro four-thirds camera body that's smaller or lighter than the M200. The OM-1 is bigger and heavier than the EOS RP full-frame camera, the GH 5II, GH6 & GH 9 are bigger and heavier than my EOS R. I have some attraction for the R7 until I see its price (too much for a glorified teleconverter that's not significantly smaller than the R), but the attraction of my EOS M cameras is their size. I'm sticking with EOS M as right now there is no alternative, at least not in the new camera market.
I don't worry about this too much. I have some old cameras. Just bought an immaculate M2 from Japan. It's white like my M100. I have two lenses, both silver, a 22 and the 15-45 I got from Canon Refurb for $85. It makes a nice travel set.
For 4k video I have a 90D with a battery grip. I don't know what the R line offers, and probably won't care for some time.
No regrets for investing in the M line. I had the M, the M50, sold both easily. So I don't think they're collectible but certainly a nice tool to have.
