They really didn't. The 35 F1.8 is pretty good for this. I don't know what reviews you've read, but they seem to have given you a mistaken impression of the lens

For myself, it was what Dustin Abbott said.

In the part « Conclusion ». The word « underwhelmed ». Saying that it wasn’t as good as the EF 35mm f/2 IS.

For me the price would be 549 Euros. Which is maybe 200 Euros more than I paid for my EF 35mm f/2 IS, four years ago.

Dustin Abbott makes it sound only marginally better than the 50 RF, which I could have for 229 Euros.

I generally like Dustin as a reviewer, but I don't agree with him on this.
My other AF35 is the f1.4 L II,  a pretty decent lens in anyone's book. But I use the RF 35 more these days because it's surprisingly good - not as good, but not streets behind - a fair bit smaller and lighter, and  has IS and near-macro. No issues at all with the AF - I've had this lens now for just about 4 years, and never missed a shot because of the AF speed. (I have with the 85 f2, or at least I did before I started using the focus limiter properly...)
Yes, it's not quite as small as the 40, and yes, I miss that. I would love a slightly wide pancake in RF mount. But for general use, it's a terrific lens.
