‘Technological Darwinism, despite all the woo-hoo of Foveon fanatics.’

That is how Eric Fossum described the commercial demise of Foveon in 2013.

I would say that the only inherent problem of Foveon technology is bad color separation, which a) amplifies noise while converting colors (thus affecting ISO sensitvity too) and b) may create some color errors in developed image.

Yes, this is fundamental to the concept of using silicon as both photodetector and filter.

There is also a lot more read noise in the sensor due to unsuppressed kTC noise so this will impact low light performance.

Many companies have IP that is similar, and nearly all companies passed on the opportunity to buy Foveon for pennies on the dollar. The technology did not flourish for some good reasons. This is technological Darwinism, despite all the woo-hoo of Foveon fanatics.

The 2013 discussion is very interesting, particularly given the credentials of some of the participants.
