Optically the Canon combo seems to be at least as good if not better, although obviously the Olympus combo has more reach (800mm vs 640).

Actually that's not really true, because of the MP difference. The R7's sensor is 32MP 1.6x crop, and the OM-1's is 20MP 2.0x crop. If you do the arithmetic it works out that they have almost exactly the same pixel density, so when you're using the same focal length on both the resolution per subject (which is what reach is all about) is the same.

That's a fair point, and I've actually made a similar-ish point before myself: that M43 vs APS-C (particularly Canon as it's smaller) is as much an aspect-ratio difference as a size difference. M43 and Canon APS-C are only 15% different vertically, but 30% horizontally.

Pixel size is 3.18um for the R7 and 3.35 um for the OM-1. So, yes, in terms of 'pixels per duck' they'd be very comparable at equal FL from the same location.

This timely for me. I just started shooting birds with a 7D and EF-S 55-250mm. It wasn’t a gambol because I had owned the same combo years ago. But I did’t do any wildlife photography back then.  So, this is just a way to get started.

In terms of equipment currently, I have one foot in M4/3 (GX9) and one in the Canon world  (5D, 6D & now 7D; previously RP)  but more history with Canon.

So nowI am looking for an expansion path - but in the low end of the budget range.

Today, I took a rented Oly EM1 mark ii to the local lake with a PL 14-140mm lens.  The Olympus menus are a huge challenge and I don’t enjoy shooting with this particular model - yet.  But a couple of hours ago,  I checked the images, and they look great in terms of IQ, exposure and colors.  Even though the weather was a bit dismal,  the 7D would have found a way to blow a few highlights at some point. But not the EM1.ii.

So now Canon that has made a big push into crop sensor R bodies (and a very modest push into RF-S lenses) and the Canon R10 is a serious rival to m4/3.    As far stated above, the sensor size is not that different.
An M10 with the budget RF 100-400 could a great combo for a relatively modest price.  M4/3 could match it with an Olympus or Panasonic body (em5.iii or g95) and a 100-300 lens (gives reach to 600mm).

I am not in a desperate hurry, so I haven’t made any choices yet. . But I do not recall a situation where Olympus/OMG and Canon were competing head to head like this.
