Yes it can. How reliable it is? As long as the object you want to focus on have enough contrast & have no obstruction whatsoever, the camera will latch on to it.

But if the object got obstructed by another object or lack of contrast the AF may drift . Sometimes the AF still stay on the object, sometimes it will lose focus altogether.

AFAIK nikon & sony will maintain the size of AF point while tracking. While canon adjust the size of AF point depend on the context of the scene.

Edit : sorry if the video qualities are poor. I use canon R7 which have similar AF with R3 and R6 II. Older eos R cameras have different AF behavior
