What would the FFF have to do in order to be competative?

Dynamic range is limited by the noise floor. Current Bayer sensors have extremely low read noise, there is not a lot of wiggle left for improving this, it's already close to as low as it can go. The noise that remains in modern sensors is mostly photon shot noise which can't be improved. Foveon sensors have historically been quite noisy compared to Bayer sensors, they have an awful lot of read noise and noise from the extreme colour transformations to overcome to get close to Bayer sensors. And given how quickly older Foveon's fall apart as soon as the ISO goes up or with underexposure, there is not a lot of history to suggest that Sigma have any obvious magic to fix this.

Perhaps someone in the know can set out the technical reasons for Foveon's issues with noise? EDIT: I see this has already been done below. Thanks.
