From the reviews I've read, the f/1.8 is not it !

Agree. I have one and it’s not a compact lens, nor does it have the best rendering. IMO it’s not quite as good as the EF 35/2 IS, overall.

A lot of complaints about focus hunting....it needs a switch to lock out the macro range.

Might help but, while focus issues can be provoked, AF is not a huge issue.

The 40mm f2.8 pancake is my favorite walk around EF lens....how bout one for the RF mount?

Or a standard 35mm compact "street" lens, f/2.8 would be fine.

If a lens like the Sony Zeiss 35/2.8 was available in RF I’d buy it right away.

Either would make the RP body a killer street combo.

Why did Canon leave such an essential "use type" out of it's RF lineup?

Presumably because they are not finished. Overall, the  intros for RF have been better than for the A7 where it sometimes seemed like Sony & Zeiss we’re only making 35mm & 50-ish lenses for a couple of years.
