RAM upgrade for Davinci Resolve - what does it do?

hello. I have started working in 8K and my laptop is struggling (AMD5800, 16gb ram, nvidia3070). I know i need a complete new desktop system as the CPU & GPU is limiting what i can render but the current cost of video cards is quite ridiculous, so i'm looking for a short term fix.

When editing 8k footage i note that memory hits 100% whenever i switch tabs, load a project or make a big leap in the timeline. this causes severe slowdown which is annoying but I can live with that. When doing most of everything else the memory seems to hover well below 100% (although I dont do anything fancy) suggesting that for most stuff i do 16gb is enough... Or is it? So I know upgrading to 64gb is recommended for 8K but apart from making loading, tab switching faster does it have other benefits? Im trying to work out if its actually worth spending the money (approx £140) on this knowing that i will almost certainly get a totally new machine much later in the year?

I know someone else is going to suggest proxies but that is not something i want to consider due to storage limitations and also because it sounds like it adds a lot of hassle and complexity and time into everything.
