I hope the R8 isn't a simultaneous update of the RP and R. Canon needs something to go head to head with the likes of the A7R3 & A7IV IMO. Something in the R6' price range with more resolution. RP is fine; expectations are low at that price point. R was outdated at launch and is in most need of replacement.

I don't see there will be a basic sub-$1500 full-frame with more than 24mp when the R6ii is only 24mp. The RP has 26mp because they use 6Dii leftover sensors.

But I agree there is too much of a gap between 24 and 45mp. Something in the middle makes sense.

Lets see if they can put some order with their camera names which is confusing.

R3, R5, R6 full-frames

R7 APSC

R8 again a FF?

R10 APSC

What about R1, R2, R4 and R9 for APSc or FF?

It’s all about FF. At the risk of repeating myself, Canon is chasing the dollar here. So is Sony. Their APS-C has seen no love, on the stills side.
