Well, it's not necessary to tape any contacts, because Canon's firmware 1.1.1 fixed the problem.

I really do suspect this was a mere glitch that caused the camera firmware to crash, rather than a deliberate attempt to actively block the lens from working.

I think what must have happened was that the camera, when booting, sends a signal and expects a certain response, or a response in general, from the lens, and the response from the Samyang lens was not the same as a Canon len's response, such that the firmware actually would crash upon receiving it. Many programmers could tell you of a time when unexpected input caused such an issue. I strongly suspect that the camera was only tested with Canon lenses before launch and so the issue wouldn't have come up. Of course, Canon engineers don't necessarily have documentation of how Samyang lenses repond to the camera, too. They're two fairly opaque boxes.

If you look at how Canon treats unlicensed accessories they want to block (see batteries), I think if that's what they had wanted, they would have displayed a message or similar, rather than crashing and requiring a full battery-eject reboot. Remember that the camera doesn't turn all the way off when powered down; it has a low-energy "off" mode. I suppose that's probably where the crash occurred.
