You certainly are working with a lot of anticipated variables in this thread. I've done some event photography in larger rooms with 18-55/f3.5 and 16-80/f4 lenses on APS-C bodies and they came out fine.

I think it would be a good idea to get into the venue if possible, and do some shooting well ahead of the event. Your 18-55 would probably do it well enough, and free you from overthinking the gear aspects of the shoot.
