From the reviews I've read, the f/1.8 is not it !

From my usage, the F1.8 is it!

A lot of complaints about focus hunting....

Never experienced that.

it needs a switch to lock out the macro range.

No, it really doesn't.

The 40mm f2.8 pancake is my favorite walk around EF lens....how bout one for the RF mount?

I liked that one too. I'm not sure whether I'd get one for RF. Maybe if it was $200 or less (I paid $179 for my EF version). But even then, it's too close to the 35 for me to use it much, just to lose a little bit of size and weight.

Or a standard 35mm compact "street" lens, f/2.8 would be fine.

The 35 F1.8 is not exactly big. It's bigger than the 16 and the 50, which are tiny, but it's still plenty small enough for a "street" lens, and F1.8 is significantly better than F2.8. And the IS and close-focusing capabilities are really useful (at least to me).

Either would make the RP body a killer street combo.

The 35 is especially useful on the RP, and the R, because of the IS.

Why did Canon leave such an essential "use type" out of it's RF lineup?

They really didn't. The 35 F1.8 is pretty good for this. I don't know what reviews you've read, but they seem to have given you a mistaken impression of the lens.
