In my novice photog experience - taking group photos with a wide aperture always screws me with blurry people on the ends? Obviously I love a wide aperture for low light but won't it screw me on getting group photos, or is there something I'm missing!

also thanks everyone for all this advice

wait, the aperture is not fixed, you can always close it up, right? or, am I misunderstanding you?

I took this group photo with the 50-140/2.8, but I closed the aperture to f/6.4

The question was with "wide aperture lenses."  Your image is at 85mm with the excellent 50-140 and not too near the wide end where there may be some barrel distortion..  And I mentioned stopping down may improve the image.
