In my novice photog experience - taking group photos with a wide aperture always screws me with blurry people on the ends? Obviously I love a wide aperture for low light but won't it screw me on getting group photos, or is there something I'm missing!

also thanks everyone for all this advice

Generally, the issue with people on the ends of an image taken a wide aperture lens is possible distortion..... much more so with a zoom lens.  Even with distortion correction in camera or post ,people may not look like themselves.  Excellent quality primes can mitigate the issue.  If you use wide aperture make sure there is sufficient room in the frame between anyone at the ends and the edge of the image.

Increasing the aperture can lessen the distortion.
