Canon 100-400mm II not the best upgrade from Tamron 150-600mm for wildlife and bird photography?

We are still saving up for the canon 100-400mm II lens to our 7D II for wildlife and BIF photography, but recently, a sports photographer claimed that the 100-400mm ii would not be the best possible upgrade for us. The jump from Tamrln 150-600mm with its f5-6.3 to Canon 100-400mm ii with its f4.5-5.6 is not that great upgrade and it would be a waste of money for our purpose(s), he said.

Ok, if that is the case, then what other lens is it worth going for instead of the Canon 100-400mm ii, which is the most expensive lens we can go for, so suggesting a more expensive lens than the 100-400mm is pointless...

Can you guys help us navigate to the approperiate lens for our purposes, perhaps? Or is the 100-400mm II that big of an upgrade from our Tamron 150-600mm that it will be worth going for the Canon 100-400mm II after all? Any thoughts on that? Thank you. 🙏
