Exactly the same thing has happened with Raspberry Pi single board computers (and many other products). Component shortages have restricted the numbers being manufactured while demand from buyers has remained constant. Inevitably in a market place, this has pushed up prices, in some cases to astonishing levels. No hype involved.

I agree it's just supply and demand. I caved and searched fujifilm / X100V on TikTok from their browser interface and none of the videos are remarkable. Just like 'here's some shots I took with my camera' kind of thing. Some with 2M views but that's not uncommon for TikTok. It's short form video and 2M views are not the same thing as 2M views on youtube or 2M visitors to your website. The internet is not the same as it was 10 years ago (tumblr, facebook, twitter.) This forum is a little closer to the internet of 20 years ago (threaded forums, crazy quote trees, max 10 pictures to limit bandwidth? like no, we just scroll now through an infinite feed of photos and videos.)

But of course even if 0.1% of those 2M decide they want an X100V that's 2000 people on eBay pushing up used prices when the new ones are out of stock. Most teenagers aren't going to be bidding $2k on an X100 but if they are buying up the new stock then it just increases the scarcity.
