A funny market for the 24-105 G

I bought mine for about $1200 three years ago. I see that it's currently listed at about $1300 at major retailers like B&H. However, there are (reasonably reputable) cut-price sellers who offer it for under $1000. On eBay, good used copies are going for around $650 to $700.

Maybe it's partly because there are so many more alternatives nowadays, and a lot of people who bought them a few years ago find that they no longer want them. I don't use mine very much, and would sell it if the price were better. However, given the low market price for used ones, I might as well just hang on to it.

Or perhaps it's because there really is an updated version that will soon be sprung on the market.

Some people in these forums talk about lenses as an "investment" that will hold their value (in contrast to camera bodies). In fact, nowadays most of them seem to lose a large proportion of their value pretty quickly. There are lots of new ones coming out, particularly for Sony. Supply keeps rising, in a market with stagnant or declining demand, as fewer and fewer people buy interchangeable lens cameras.
