Probably the issue could be much improved if they would simply reverse the colors. As is, the larger amount of black can obscure what you really need to see.

The button next to the LCD inverts the colours, doesn’t it?

That manual says it illuminates the panel. It doesn't. It just inverts the pattern to how it should be - temporarily. My DSLRs had a button that caused the LCD to actually illuminate - very useful when it's dark.

On the EOS R it's marked as an illuminated light bulb and does illuminate the screen, albeit very dimly. Just as well for star parties.

It does illuminate. My mistake. Still, I wish the reverse pattern would be permanent and let the illumination just be illumination.
