It's just history.  Back in the early days of analogue video it was relatively easy to design circuits to pull that information out of the video signal and present it on CRT tubes for the guidance of the recording engineer.  Still photography never had that possibility until the days of digital processing.  The two disciplines never really talked to each other until relatively recently when everything went digital.  Even now they're worlds apart.
