Lovely Lenticulars
10

I'm fortunate to live in an area where we experience the build-up of Lenticular clouds each winter.

Here's the explanation for this phenomenon from Wiki:

"As air travels along the surface of the Earth, obstructions are often encountered, including natural features, such as mountains or hills, and artificial structures, such as buildings and other constructions, which disrupt the flow of air into "eddies", or areas of turbulence.

When moist, stable air flows over a larger eddy, such as those caused by mountains, a series of large-scale standing waves form on the leeward side of the mountain. If the temperature at the crest of the wave drops below the dew point, moisture in the air may condense to form lenticular clouds."

These images were taken on the leeward side of the Sangre de Cristo Range in Colorado.  While a big snowstorm is building in the NW part of the state we are graced by jet stream type winds in front of the incoming storms.  While it is simply beautiful to be in their presence the winds that flow down the slopes beneath the clouds are strong and very cold.   The wind was blowing 30-40 mph when I took these images and it was difficult to keep the tripod upright and my fingers mobile.  Hope you enjoy them!
