As I mentioned previously, you can have the rear screen always display the settings, so you can glance at the rear screen instead of the top one
Thanks for your helpful reply. It won't work for me in all situations that I find myself in (astrophotography and other shoots where I have the rear screen flipped around and my eye is not up to the EVF, for example) but it may be the closest I can get with this design. I don't chimp that much so I currently use the rear screen just to check the histogram and for the "spirit level" on my 5DIV, and for those functions plus the Q menu on my 6DII to change the white balance.
Thanks again for your info. If I make the purchase that's how I'd set it up.
A friend of mine does Astro often. Once the camera is on his motorised mount and aligned he doesn’t like to tough it. The to- lcd he did find useful on the as the glow didn’t affect his shots. Instead, he now uses his phone via the app to see all the settings and adjust as needed so he can shoot fully hands off. Only thing he would like to see added now would be remote manual focus.
Using the phone app would offer great functionality for shooting hands off, definitely. And the rear screen doesn't affect my shots, but it does affect night vision, and I'm always careful and considerate of those around me when I'm in a dark site with others. I don't want to have my rear screen flashing constantly if I'm doing star trails and other multiple nighttime exposures for stacking.
