100-500 zoom stiffness

This morning I tried the lens, on new R5, at the lake with waterbirds approaching in flight.  As they approached I reduced the zoom, so as to keep as much of the bird in the frame as possible.  This was my technique with the other manufacturer's gear, from which I switched after 10 years.

Although set to Smooth, the zoom felt stiff, to me.  Does it become less stiff with time?

Thanks in advance.
