Re: RF-S Lenses - What We Know and What is Rumored

Reusing optical designs

While I'm sure there is disagreement I see no issue with reusing optical designs particularly to "jump start" a new product line such as the RF-S lenses.
Resources are limited and it takes a long time to design a new lens from scratch.

I'd say the sole exception should be DSLR lenses with focal lengths shorter than 60mm.

There's too much potential size and/or optical quality gain there when compared with just sticking a tube on the back of an existing lens.

I mean, realistically it will happen, but updating those shorter lenses should be among the priorities (especially if Canon is freezing third party lenses out).

Thankfully for Canon, that's less of a problem for them thanks to the EF-M lenses that they can adapt though.

Could always license some lenses like Nikon is too. That Tamron 17–70mm F2.8 is something I'd love to see on RF-S, even if under Canon colours and there are plenty of mirrorless-designed wide and normal primes available for license (but I digress).
